The death toll isn't the figure that stands out this week. It's the 4%. Nepal's Ministry of Health says that of the roughly 900 bodies recovered so far, only 4 out of every 100 have been identified. In Chitwan district, more than 125 miles from where the water hit, workers have spent days digging graves in a forest because the morgues ran out of room. A policeman overseeing one burial site told reporters his crew laid more than 200 unidentified bodies in the ground in a single day. That is the scale of what happened on the Nepal-Tibet border last week, and nine days later, we are still watching the toll climb.

Where the numbers stand right now

As of September 1, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority puts the confirmed death count at 1,010, with 1,473 people injured and 11,814 rescued. Nearly 3,916 are still listed as missing, including 583 foreign nationals from 38 countries. On the Tibetan side of the border, Chinese state media reports a separate, much smaller count — 16 dead, 546 missing — a gap that has itself become part of the story, which I'll get to. The United Nations calls it Nepal's deadliest natural disaster since the 2015 earthquake that killed roughly 9,000 people, and the Nepal Red Cross says more than 90,000 people have been affected in some way, with 65,000 now needing emergency water and sanitation support.

It started on a Wednesday, when a mass of ice and rock broke away from a cliff roughly 16,000 feet up in the Himalayas and slid nearly 6,000 feet down the slope. The impact registered as a magnitude-5.2 seismic event, according to the U.S. Geological Survey — strong enough that it was briefly, mistakenly logged as an earthquake. What followed was a wall of mud and meltwater that tore down the Trishuli River valley, through Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, flattening the border crossing at Rasuwagadhi and burying whole stretches of riverside towns like Devighat and Bidur under sludge.

The report that's hard to read as anything but a warning we missed

On August 28, a group of international glaciologists working under a rapid-assessment network called HiRISK published preliminary findings that, frankly, made me angry to read. Satellite imagery, they said, showed "pre-event indications" — visible changes on the glacier's surface — in the days before it collapsed. Jakob Steiner, a geologist on the team who has advised Nepal's government on Himalayan disaster risk, put it plainly: early warning systems for the construction workers camped at hydropower sites below the glacier were "very weak." This wasn't a total surprise sprung from nowhere. Nepali and Chinese officials had actually sat down together in Kathmandu back in May to talk through exactly this kind of risk — glacial hazards, monitoring, joint response — according to a meeting agenda reviewed by Reuters. And yet, when the mountain moved, there was still no functioning early warning system in place to get people out of the valley.

But minutes matter when you're talking about workers living in tents and dormitories directly in a flood's path, and "minimal warning" is still a lot better than the "no warning" those crews apparently had.

A border that's telling two different stories

The disparity between Nepal's toll and Tibet's official count has drawn its own scrutiny. CNN has reported that journalists from outlets outside China's national media have said they've been blocked from reporting in the affected part of Tibet, while Chinese censors have removed disaster-related posts and reprimanded people accused of spreading what officials called false information about the scope of the damage. Asked about the claims, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry said the government has been "releasing information openly, transparently and in a timely manner." I'll let readers draw their own conclusions about how those two things square with a death count on that side of the border that has barely moved in days while Nepal's has doubled and doubled again.

The ground still hasn't settled

There's some genuinely better news on one front: the lake that formed in the crater left by the initial collapse — the one everyone feared would burst and send a second flood downstream — has largely drained on its own. "There is not the urgency that there was before," a CNN report on the ground quoted a relief official saying this week. But Prashant Baral, a cryosphere analyst at the Kathmandu-based climate group ICIMOD, cautioned that the surrounding terrain is far from stable: the leftover glacier ice, the fractured bedrock, and the recently disturbed slopes above the valley "may still be unstable" following a rock-ice avalanche of that size. Nepal's army has kept rescue teams working in the hills regardless. "We are working in search and rescue of the stranded people from hills, settlements and river areas," Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet, the army's spokesman, said this week, as foreign teams — including a 44-member South Korean group dispatched at Nepal's request — continue arriving to help.

What the U.N. is asking the world to see in this

Speaking for the U.N. on Monday, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric noted that more than 22,000 children now need protection services in the disaster zone, on top of the immediate rescue and water needs. Simon Stiell, the U.N.'s climate chief, went further, tying the disaster directly to the broader warming trend: he said a warming climate driven by burning coal, oil, and gas is making tragedies like this one "much more likely, frequent and severe," and that vulnerable mountain communities are often hit hardest. It's not a new argument, but standing in front of a death toll like this one, it doesn't feel like an abstraction either.
