If you've been telling yourself you'll start Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 "someday," someday just got a date. On October 15, 2026, the game that won Game of the Year at The Game Awards leaves Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, along with eight other titles, including A Plague Tale: Requiem and Pacific Drive. If you count today and stop on the 14th, which is the last full day I'd trust, that leaves you twelve days.
I'm not going to retype Microsoft's list, because every gaming site already has it. What I can add are three things you won't get from the list: a pace calculator for finishing before the deadline, a cost-per-hour check if you'd rather own it, and my own triage order for all nine games, because nobody has time for all of them. I'll also tell you what I think about a service that lets a Game of the Year winner walk out the door after about 18 months. One honest note first: this is built from published reporting and plain arithmetic, and where I couldn't verify something, I say so.
In Brief
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and eight other games leave Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on October 15, 2026. The others are A Plague Tale: Requiem, Crime Scene Cleaner, Donut County, Evil West, Pacific Drive, The Casting of Frank Stone, Nova Roma and Superball.
- The game joined Game Pass on day one, April 24, 2025, so it's leaving after roughly 18 months. It later won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025.
- GameSpot reports that you can save 20% on these games if you buy them before they leave. On Steam, the standard edition was already listed at $39.99 under a 20% sale tag when I checked, so on PC the member discount may not beat what's already out there.
- My math: a brisk playthrough of about 30 hours means roughly 2.5 hours a day for 12 days. At $39.99 that's about $1.33 per hour.
- My take: finish it if you can, buy it only if you'll miss it, and don't let a countdown timer decide for you.
What actually happens on October 15
Here's the confirmed part. Microsoft updated the "leaving soon" section of Game Pass this week, and the nine games come off on October 15 for Xbox and PC subscribers. Expedition 33 arrived on April 24, 2025, available on Game Pass from its first day, which puts the run at about 18 months. If you already own it on PS5, Steam or the Microsoft Store, nothing changes for you. This is only about people playing it through the subscription.
It's also worth remembering that this isn't a one-off. GameSpot noted that September was a big month for removals too, with 18 games leaving, including The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Sifu and Frostpunk 2. So when I say the machine is working as designed, I mean it. Game Pass is a rotating library, and rotation is the whole point. That's exactly why I think it's worth talking about what gets rotated.
Is 18 months a fair run? Yes and no
The yes. Eighteen months is a long time on a subscription. For a lot of people, that was a day-one pass to one of the most talked-about role-playing games of the decade, with no extra charge. Nobody was tricked. The game was never promised to the service forever, and Game Pass has never worked that way.
The no. Look at what happened while it was on the service. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards on December 11, 2025, leading the show with 13 nominations and nine wins, and it was the first debut game to take the top prize. It won the D.I.C.E. Awards' Game of the Year in February and Best Game at the BAFTA Games Awards in April. Wikipedia's tally has it past 8 million copies sold as of April 24, 2026. That's the best argument Game Pass has ever had for itself: the subscription is where people discover games they'd never gamble $50 on. And now the proof leaves at the moment more people than ever want to try it.
I couldn't find any official explanation for why this game is going or whether it's coming back, so I won't guess at the contract details. What I can say is that the feeling is the same one a lot of subscribers have had all year. A library you can walk out of is wonderful, until your favorite shelf is the one being cleared.
My 12-day finish plan
If you'd rather finish than buy, the math is friendlier than the panic suggests. Kotaku has described Expedition 33 as completable in a brisk 30 hours or so, and TrueAchievements says unlocking the Mythic achievement takes 60 to 80 hours. Those are estimates, and your pace depends on difficulty and how many side paths you take, but they're a good bracket. Here's what they work out to over 12 days. The division is mine.
About 30 hours over 12 days. That's a couple of evenings a week plus a long weekend, which is realistic for most people with a job.
About 40 hours. This is my own middle case, not a published figure, for players who like to explore without chasing every achievement.
About 60 hours, the low end of TrueAchievements' estimate for the Mythic achievement. That's possible, but I'd call it a second-job pace. If this is your plan, buying it is cheaper than burning two weeks.
Then set checkpoints so you find out early if you're behind. These are rules I'd use, nothing official:
- Oct 6 · day 4You should be about a third of the way through your target hours. If you're not, switch to the buy-or-let-go decision now, while you still have time to think.
- Oct 10 · day 8About two-thirds done. If you're at one-third, you're on the buy path, so stop pretending.
- Oct 14 · day 12Your buffer day. Treat it as the last day you can trust, because I couldn't find the exact hour the game comes off on the 15th.
Own it or let it go: the cost-per-hour check
Now the money. Steam lists the standard edition at $49.99 and the Deluxe Edition at $59.99, and when I checked, Steam had both at 20% off, $39.99 and $47.99, as part of a sale event. GameSpot reports that you can save 20% on these nine games if you buy before they leave Game Pass. By my arithmetic that lands in the same place as Steam's sale, about $40 for the standard edition. Prices move, so check your own store before you trust any of this.
You're already paying for the subscription. This is the cheapest ending, if your schedule cooperates.
20% off $49.99. At a 30-hour playthrough that's about $1.33 an hour, and at 60 hours it's about $0.67.
20% off $59.99. I can't tell you what the extras are worth to you, so I'd only pay the difference if you already know you want them.
GameSpot reported that the biggest discount before a one-day Fanatical deal had been 20% on Steam, and that deal reached 29%, or $35.49. A deal like that is a rare outlier, so I wouldn't count on one.
That last card is the useful one. Because the game's usual sale floor has been about 20%, the member discount isn't a bargain you'll lose forever. It's roughly the deal you can find anyway. The only thing that actually expires on October 15 is free access. So my rule is simple: don't buy because the clock is ticking. Buy because you finished the first few hours, you're hooked, and you won't make it by the 14th.
All nine games, in the order I'd play them
The other eight games are leaving the same day, and you only have one pair of thumbs. This is my ranking, based on what's been published about each game. It's an opinion, not a review of nine games I've replayed this week.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Start tonightA turn-based RPG with real-time dodges and parries, where you can't zone out on enemy turns. It's the biggest name on the list and one of the longest, so it needs the most runway.
The Casting of Frank Stone
October pickA Dead by Daylight spin-off. GameSpot pointed out the timing is inconvenient for horror fans during the spookiest month of the year, and I agree.
Pacific Drive
Worth the timeGameSpot called it one of its favorites: an eerie roguelite driving game built on mystery and survival, set in a strange version of the Pacific Northwest.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
Story pickReleased in October 2022, and one of the two big names outlets singled out alongside Expedition 33. I'd start it only if you can spare a weekend.
Evil West
Pick oneGameSpot's verdict was a solid 7/10 with plenty of monster-slaying energy. It's good for a night when you want to shoot things and not think.
Donut County
Palate cleanserA puzzle game where you control an ever-growing hole. Good between big games, and it fits in the cracks of a busy week.
Crime Scene Cleaner
Curiosity onlyA first-person cleaning simulator with crime-scene investigation elements. It's a niche taste, so try it only if that sounds fun.
Nova Roma
Game PreviewA Windows title labeled as Game Preview, which means it's unfinished by definition. I wouldn't rush it.
Superball
No rushA free-to-play game with Game Pass Perks, so what you lose is the perks, not the game. Nothing to race for.
What I wish Game Pass would do instead
I don't think Microsoft should freeze its catalog. A subscription that never changes would be a worse subscription, and the rotation is a big reason the price makes sense. What I'd like is a better goodbye. A "leaving soon" row that tells you roughly how long the game takes to beat, and whether your save will survive if you buy it, would be more useful than a countdown and a coupon. The 20% discount is a nice gesture, and I mean that. But a coupon is a nudge to spend money, not a way of helping you finish a story you were enjoying.
There's also a bigger point about what a subscription is. It's a library card, not a bookshelf. That's fine, as long as we're honest about it. Every time a game like this leaves, it reminds me that the version of "ownership" I get from a monthly fee is really access, and access ends when someone else decides it should.
What nobody has told us yet
- Why Expedition 33 is leaving now.I couldn't find an official explanation. The listings just say it's leaving soon.
- Whether it ever comes back.Nothing official that I could find. I'd treat "it'll return" as hope, not a plan.
- What happens to your save.I couldn't confirm whether progress carries over to a purchased copy, so check before you rely on it.
- What Sandfall does next.Reporting says the studio is in pre-production on its next project, with no confirmed sequel, genre or release date.
If you've been waiting for the right moment, start tonight and use the day-4 and day-8 checkpoints to find out where you stand. If you're on pace, finish it for free. If you're behind and you're hooked, the standard edition at about $40 is a fair price, and it isn't a deal you need to panic about. If you're not hooked after a few hours, let it go and spend those hours on the second game on my list. The worst way to play any game is to resent it because of a deadline.
